Since this site is about WP it is best to use hosting that is WP optimized (often these hosting providers have WP caching included without a plugin. They also, often for free give you access to a CDN (content delivery network) like Cloudflare etc.
However, image sizing an compression is often overlooked, especially for “creative’s type sites…artists etc.” There are a few online image resizing sites for new images, however, for images that are already uploaded to your site it is quicker add a plugin (don’t worry you can turn it off, or deleted after compressing onsite images). I use Smush as the free version does a decent job and it’s limits are by quanitiy per session but sessions can be done consecutively with no time limit. Others limit the numbers and time…some even limit how many per month…not fun when trying to update a site. Anyway, after the already uploaded ones are done, you can turn off the plugin or delete it altogether.
Image sizing should be done according to the site not a specific size for all sites. So you’ll have to do some research for optimum sizes for various locations on your site.
For sites that use pagebuilders…you often get a ton of extra style sheets, javasrcript links and other files that “google page speed” will tell you
need to be combined or minified (note: you may see some issues with Google’s own pages related to your page speed results…this will take some “googling” to find a fix for), If you have gotten this far then you are getting to diminishing returns….and that may require extra caching (plugins).
Also, never ever host embedded videos on your hosting server. Use Youtube, Vimeo, Amazon (AWS) or some of the newer cloud file hosting like the ones Google and Microsoft offer.
Hope this helps!
